[ Summary ] Vascular and valvular calcification are highly prevalent and closely associated with a worse prognosis among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is an unmet need to establish effective strategies to overcome the progression of vascular/valvular calcification in CKD. In this review, we focus on the clinical impact of 1) phosphate binders, 2) dialysate calcium concentrations, 3) calcimimetics/parathyroidectomy, 4) vitamin K, and 5) magnesium on vascular/valvular calcification based primarily on findings from randomized controlled trials. In addition, we discuss a novel procedure for severe aortic stenosis-TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation)-given its remarkable potency for the high risk population.
