[ Summary ] Androgens bind to their specific receptor, androgen receptor (AR), and liganded ARs play roles in the regulation of transcription for target genes to maintain homeostasis. Testosterone, one of the androgens, can be converted to both DHT as a strong AR ligand by 5α-reductase and E2 as an ER ligand by aromatase. To understand androgens' functions in bone homeostasis, we should consider the roles of androgen/AR and estrogen/ER signaling.
