[ Summary ] Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) with central dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the current "gold standard" for diagnosing osteoporosis. Peripheral measurement is used alternatively when central DXA is not available or for screening of osteoporosis. We should remember that although bone loss occurs in the whole skeleton in osteoporosis, the results of bone measurements are not always the same in different skeletal sites. Recently, new techniques have been introduced for clinical use in assessing determinants of bone strength other than BMD, such as bone geometry and microstructures.
