[ Summary ] Periodontal medicine is a research field that focuses on the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases and has led to the establishment of one of the academic systems. The relationships between periodontal disease and obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, aspiration pneumonia, premature birth, and low birth weight have been reported over 20 years. In recent years, a variety of evidences has been obtained regarding new associations between periodontitis and malignant tumors and geriatric diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. This research area has shown progress ; however, there are also some controversies. Therefore, this review discusses the status quo in periodontal medicine, including the relationship between periodontal disease and kidney disease.
