[ Summary ] | The peak bone mass acquired during puberty is one of the most significant predictive factors for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Hormones, including estrogens, play an important role during pubertal accumulation of bone mass. Therefore, women with amenorrheae due to Turner syndrome, anorexia nervosa, and childhood cancer, as well as athletic women, have low bone mineral density. Amenorrhea in young women should be carefully evaluated and treated to prevent bone mineral loss. |
