[ Summary ] The impact of fragility factures, especially hip fractures, on ADL and QOL is severe in the aged population. In Japan, the incidence of hip fractures has increased dramatically as the population has aged. This was illustrated in the Niigata Prefecture Hip Fracture Study which took place from 1985 to 2010. Effective intervention(s) to prevent secondary fractures in patients with hip fractures are required in Japan. David Mash et al. in the United Kingdom produced a guideline with multidisciplinary management of the elderly for treatment of acute hip fractures and secondary prevention. This was known as the Blue Book. Lessons learned from experiences in the United Kingdom are informative and useful.
