[ Summary ] Chondrocytes play an essential role in endochondral ossification which is a fundamental biological event in skeletal development. Chondrocyte differentiation is a multistep process and various factors regulate the fine tuning of chondrocyte gene expression. Epigenetic regulation including, DNA methylation and histone modification, has emerged as a critical regulator of gene expression. Recent studies have indicated that chondrocyte differentiation is also modulated by epigenetic regulators. In this review, we would like to introduce current topics of study concerning epigenetic regulation involved in chondrocyte differentiation.
