[ Summary ] An accumulating body of evidence indicates that glucose and lipid metabolism is closely associated with bone metabolism. Life style-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia are risk factors not only for cardiovascular disease but also for osteoporotic fractures. It is thought that chronic hyperglycemia and oxidative stress cause impaired bone quality. Although bone is affected by glucose and lipid metabolism, bone regulates it vice versa. These facts indicate that bone as well as glucose and lipid metabolism are linked. It is thus important for clinicians to understand the mechanisms of these relationships to provide treatments for life style-related diseases and osteoporosis.
