[ Summary ] Reductions in mechanical stress due to situations such as space flight, cast immobilization and long-term bedrest, induce skeletal muscle atrophy. Muscle atrophy under these unloading conditions are termed disuse muscle atrophy. Disuse muscle atrophy causes the severe loss of muscle mass comparable to muscle atrophy caused by Summary aging. Elucidation of the mechanisms of sensing applicable to mechanical stress in skeletal muscles is useful in therapy for muscle atrophy. In this review, the relationships between mechanical stress and skeletal muscles are outlined in relation to mechanisms of disuse muscle atrophy.
