[ Summary ] Vitamin D is an important regulator of phosphorus and calcium metabolism. The primary role of vitamin D in phosphorus metabolism is to increase serum phosphorus levels through stimulation of intestinal phosphorus absorption, renal phosphorus reabsorption, and bone resorption. On the other hand, vitamin D regulates the network of phosphorus metabolism via down-regulation of parathyroid hormone, and up-regulation of FGF23 or Koltho gene expression. In this review, the role of vitamin D in phosphorus metabolism, and the association of nutritional vitamin D status and phosphorus metabolism in chronic kidney disease are examined.
