[ Summary ] Phosphorus is an essential nutrient not only for animals, but also for plants. Once phosphorus enter an aquatic environment it can stimulate algal growth, resulting in various forms of environmental pollution such as eutrophication and red tides. Aquaculture is an environmentally costly industry because it lacks adequate effluent treatment systems. Phosphorus pollution can be minimized by enhancing the efficiency of dietary phosphorus absorption in fish. The technology has come a long way in the past decade.
