[ Summary ] Active form vitamin D is a hormone involved with calcium and phosphate homeostasis. It is also involved with parathyroid hormone and fibroblast growth factor 23. The parathyroid glands express 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 1α-hydroxylase as well as do the kidneys. Local activation of vitamin D may play a physiological role in the parathyroid glands.
