[ Summary ] Measurement of bone metabolic markers in serum or urine is increasingly recognized as a useful tool to assess bone metabolic states, To assess (1) the rate of bone loss thereafter, (2) the effects of anti-osteoporotic drugs, and (3) bone quality. Since bone metabolic rates are mainly regulated by the rate of bone resorption and almost all anti-osteoporotic drugs act to inhibit bone resorption, it is suggested that bone resorption markers may provide more important information than bone formation markers in routine clinical practice in the field of osteoporosis.
