[ Summary ] The clinical diagnosis of hyper-functioning parathyroid diseases is based largely on serum laboratory tests, since these patients are often asymptomatic. Surgery is often considered the definitive treatment for this disease. Scintigraphy and ultrasonography are the imaging modalities most often used for preoperative localization. Preoperative 99mTc-MIBI or sestamibi scintigraphy are widely used to localize hyper-functioning parathyroid tumors. The advantage of using 99mTc-MIBI is that it can be used to identify and localize not only eutopic but also ectopic parathyroid tumors. This review will provide a brief exploration of 99mTc-MIBI usage, and will relate its impact on the efficacy in the diagnosis of hyper-functioning parathyroid diseases.
