[ Summary ] Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which is the standard modality to measure bone mineral density (BMD), is indispensable in daily clinical practice. On the other hand, quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is not suitable for daily practice, but is useful to investigate the mechanisms of bone disorders and the efficacy of anti-osteoporotic agents. Making full use of high resolution CT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the microstructure of trabecular and cortical bone are investigated. DXA-based hip structure analysis (HSA) and CT-based HSA provide information on hip geometry and biomechanical properties. These quantitative assessments of bone structure are expected to contribute to the non-invasive evaluation of bone strength.
