[ Summary ] The risk of bone fractures is known to be elevated in kidney transplantation recipients. Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO) is closely linked to these patients' bone fragility. Regarding the pathogenesis of GIO, apoptosis of osteocytes seems to be a fascinating mechanism related to decreased bone strength. On the other hand, calcineurin inhibitors may be expected to protect the skeleton by reducing or eliminating glucocorticoid use, although their effects on bone remain uncertain.
