[ Summary ] Positive correlations between dietary magnesium (Mg) intake and bone mineral density (BMD) have been demonstrated. Several epidemiologic studies have found that lower Mg intake is associated with lower BMD. It is reported that Mg supplementation is followed by increased BMD in Mg depleted subjects. Impaired bone growth, decreased bone formation, increased bone resorption, and increased skeletal fragility were observed in Mg deprived animals. Bone Mg content increases in relation to renal insufficiency. Because of this Mg levels it may play a role in mineral and bone disorders experienced by dialysis patients. Chronic elevation of serum Mg in dialysis patients has a suppressive effect on parathyroid hormone secretion, which may be a factor involved in the pathogenesis of low-turnover bone disease.
