[ Summary ] Bone is significantly affected by gastrectomies, resulting in post-gastrectomy bone disease, the most frequent type of which is osteoporosis. This is a well-recognized, common complication after gastrectomies. However, the mechanisms and pathophysiology of this form of comorbidity have not been studied intensively, and accordingly are not well understood, in spite of its clinical significance. Several factors, which seem to have some influence on this complication, are discussed in this report, including absorption of calcium and vitamins, gastrointestinal humoral factors such as incretins and ghrelin, pancreatic hormones, adipokines, and serotonin based on the recent findings. Large clinical studies, in terms of these new aspects, are apparently required to establish strategies to prevent and treat this disease.
