[ Summary ] |
Arteriosclerosis and diabetes lead to deterioration of bone quality in terms of collagen cross-links formation of bone. Hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and hyperhomocysteinemia induce the reduction in benefi cial enzymatic cross-links and the accumulation of disadvantageous nonenzymatic cross-link, as well as advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in bone. In this review, I describe that diabetes and hyperhomocysteinemia are crucial determinants of detrimental crosslinking of bone collagen which have been reported in medical literature. |
