[ Summary ] Kidneys with normal renal functions can excrete excessive phosphorus. However, if renal functions have deteriorated, phosphorus can not be adequately excreted in the urine. Therefore, hyperphosphatemia is frequently seen in patients with chronic renal failure. Hyperphosphatemia is a risk factor for caldiovascular disease, associated with the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and ectopinc calcifi cation, particularly vascular calcifi cation. Because phosphorus is a nutrient contained in many foods it is necessity for patients to have correct knowledge about amounts of phosphorus contained in their diets. Phosphorus restricted diets are expected to be an important diet therapy for prevention of hyperphosphatemia and malnutrition in patients with chronic renal failure.
