[ Summary ] Bone is often regarded as a composite material consisting of apatite (HAp-like) mineral particles and organic matrix (mostly Type I collagen) phases on a microscopic scale. The mechanical properties of bone at a macroscopic scale depend on the structural organization and properties of constituents in the microscopic scale. However, the relationship between the mechanical behavior of apatite and that of collagen is unknown. We observed both the mechanical behavior of apatite and collagen in bone by using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering.
