[ Summary ] Biological apatite (BAp) is produced as a dominant mineral constituent on collagen templates during the calcification process. The preferential orientation of the apatite c-axis is strongly reflected by the direction of extended collagen fibers and other factors. It is also an indicator of bone quality parameters. Apatite orientation strongly depends on the bone portion affected by in vivo stress distribution and is also controlled by the degree of calcification and mineral apposition rate (MAR). As a result, BAp orientation sensitively changes in regenerated and pathological bones containing osteoporosis.
