[ Summary ] Assessment of vertebral fractures based on a thoraco-lumbar spine radiographs is a good method to evaluate the risk of incident fractures. However, vertebral fractures are not often diagnosed or often treated.
Quantitative (QM) and semi-quantitative (SQ) methods are designed for the assessment of prevalent and incident fractures. The positive aspects of the SQ method are greater convenience and reproducability as well as greatly inproved assessment of the risk of future fractures compared to QM. It should be recognized thatuntrained SQ readers may produce a high number of false negative readings for grade 1 (mild fracture).
