[ Summary ] |
Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is characterized by hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, urinary stones and secondary osteoporosis. Although parathyroidectomy is the only way to cure this disease, nonsurgical approachs are becoming more common for management because of an increase in mild or asymptomatic cases of pHPT. In such cases, as well as in case of parathyroid carcinoma, long term normalization of serum calcium (Ca) has been achieved by use of cinacalcet hydrochloride. It inhibits PTH secretion via acting on Ca-sensing receptor on the parathyroid cells, thereby reducing serum Ca levels. Cinacalcet may become one option therapy in patients with pHPT. |
