[ Summary ] Cinacalcet hydrochloride (cinacalcet) activates the calcium receptor (CaR) and suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion from parathyroid gland cells. The CaR also has multiple effects on parathyroid gland cells such as a suppressive effect on PTH mRNA expression and parathyroid cell proliferation. It has been illustrated in clinical studies that cinacalcet can control serum PTH levels and would be an innovative therapy for serious complication of secondary hyperparathyroidism typified by osteitis fibrosa and ectopic calcification.
