Title Effects of anti hyperlipidemic agents (statins) on bone metabolism

[ Summary ] Since Mundy and colleagues first reported in 1999 that anti hyperlipidemic statin agents showed anabolic actions on rodent bone, the effects of statins have been extensively examined. However, the results of these studies are variable depending on study models used and administration route and / or concentrations of statins. Moreover, studies on the effects of statins on bone in individuals with osteopenia are also conflicting. It is probable that currently available statins can not accumulate and exhibit consistent and significant anabolic effects on bone tissue, due to rapid degradation through the liver. The development of statins which can selectively be deposited in and act on bone tissue are anticipated.
