[ Summary ] Mesenchymal stem cells exist in bone marrow. It is possible to force stem cells into bone forming osteoblasts in in vitro culture conditions. Osteoblasts can form a bone matrix on various substrata. The matrix contains a carbonate containing biological apatite, thus we can fabricate cultured bone which mimics the in vivo bone tissue. These results indicate the possibility of clinical use of cultured bone for hard tissue regeneration. The present topics covered focus on bone tissue engineering approaches employed by professional researchers in Japan.
