[ Summary ] Inhaled and oral steroid therapy is used in the management of asthma, COPD and interstitial lung disease. These respiratory diseases often affect older people and are chronic disabling illnesses. Those patients need long term treatment, which includes inhaled or oral steroids. Older age, immobility and steroid treatment are major risk factors for osteoporosis. We found that patients who need in home oxygen therapy were likely to develop osteoporosis and vertebral bone fractures, especially when their disease had continued longer than three years. Treatment with bisphosphonates should be recommended for these patients.
