[ Summary ] Idiopathic adynamic bone disease (ABD) in dialysis patients is characterized by low serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration. We performed histomorphometric analysis of bone specimens from biopsies of patients with primary hypoparathyroidism and from autopsy specimens of bone from patients with secondary hypoparathyroidism related to long-term hemodialysis. Histomorphometric analysis indicated a diagnosis of ABD. Humplike structures, which have been called “minimodeling” were revealed.
Minimodeling might contribute to bone formation in dialysis patients with ABD, in the absence of remodeling stimulated by PTH, especially in relatively young patients with high activity levels in their daily lives.
