[ Summary ] Bone cells consist of osteoblast lineage cells and osteoclasts. Osteoblast lineage cells, including osteoblasts, osteocytes, and bone lining cells, are involved in bone formation. On the other hand, osteoclasts are engaged in bone resorption. Bone volume is maintained via bone remodeling regulated by various hormones and cytokines. Additionally, recent research revealed that the differentiation and activation of osteoclasts require RANK-RANKL interaction. Thus, bone remodeling is accomplished by harmonized interactions between osteoblast lineage cells and osteoclasts.
