[ Summary ] Calcium (Ca) overload, which can be induced by administrating Ca-based phosphate (P) binder and active vitamin D (VD) analogs, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of adynamic bone disease. Sevelamer hydrochloride (SH), which is a non-Ca-containing P binder, is expected to reduce Ca overload in the management of renal osteodystrophy, so that SH treatment can improve not only hypoparathyroidism, but also low turnover bone state in dialysis patients. The alleviated bone turnover may contribute to prevention and/or treatment of vascular calcification in dialysis patients.
