[ Summary ] We evaluated the coronary artery calcification scores (CACSs) of Japanese hemodialysis (HD) patients utilizing electron beam computed tomography (EBCT:Imatron C-150). The CACSs from 369 health check-ups were used as controls. The CACSs of 112 HD patients were remarkably higher in all age categories compared to those of thr control group. The CACSs of HD patients displayed a significant correlation in terms of age, duration of HD, Ca, Ca x P, and total prescribed dosages of CaCO3. There was no correlation noted for P. Further study is necessary to elucidate the mechanism of coronary artery calcification, and the relationship between coronary artery calcification and mortality in HD patients.
