[ Summary ] Sensitive immunoassays are available for the measurement of type I collagen telopeptides in urine and serum. Currently, these include a serum radioimmunoassay (RIA) for carboxyterminal type I collagen telopeptide generated by matrix metalloproteases (ICTP) in serum, several immunoassays involving a synthetic octapeptide from C telopeptide of type I collagen containing the crosslinking site (CTx; CrossLaps) and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for crosslinked N-terminal telopeptide type I collagen (NTx). Pyridium crosslinks and collagen telopeptides are currently considered to be the best indices for the assement of bone resorption.
