[ Summary ] The development and clinical application of metabolic bone markers have enabled us to evaluate the bone resorption and formation processes without invasive procedures. These bone metabolic markers have been utilized to assess the efficacy of treatment for osteoporotic patients. They have also been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of cancer induced bone diseases. Development of anabolic bone agents for the treatment of osteoporosis should further extend the application of these markers to the selection of drugs for treatment of osteoporotic patients.
