[ Summary ] The relationship of anatomical bone structure and trabecular microstructure to bone strength has been clarified. Recently three-dimensional image of micro structure with high resolution can be aquired, and sophisticated methods to describe and to quantify these 3-dimensional imaging data have been developed. Furthermore, a new aspect of the research in bone mechanical property in relation to bone microstructure has been progressed. In this article the usefulness of finite element analysis using three dimensional data in the evaluation of mechanical property as well as the usefulness of synchrotron X-ray CT to reveal characterization of trabecular surface and mineralization is discussed.
