[ Summary ] Calcitonin (CT) is relatively safe medicine, and synthetic eel-or salmon CT is used for osteoporosis. The efficacy of this hypocalcemic hormone is due to inhibition of bone resorption, thus it is used mainly for high-turn over-type osteoporosis with high levels of serumalkaline phosphatase, and urinary excretions of calcium and deoxypiridinorin, such as postmenopausal osteoporosis and/or osteoporosis due to immobilization. Relatively low dose, 10U twice a week or 20U once a week, is used in Japan. Efficacy of long-term administration of CT should be ascertained, because escape phenomenon of the hormone has been reported.
