[ Summary ] Hemodialysis is usually performed intermittently. The current standard hemodialysis regimen of 4-hour sessions performed thrice a week is the minimal treatment required to maintain life. Dialysis-induced complications are known to occur with worsening of patients' quality of life (QOL) and low survival rates. This challenge can be overcome by increasing the dialysis time and the number of dialysis sessions administered to patients. Increasing the dialysis time and frequency induces changes in the internal environment of the body such that it approaches the state of healthy kidney function, thereby reducing the risk of complications and improving survival rates. In recent times, an increasing number of patients choose to undergo prolonged and frequent hemodialysis. Notably, nocturnal hemodialysis and frequent home hemodialysis are being increasingly observed in clinical practice.
