[ Summary ] Patients undergoing hemodialysis are at a high risk for hip fractures. Both, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy and the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcome Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) have discussed this issue. However, whether hip fracture is a partial symptom of CKD-MBD seems unlikely. Guidelines do not mention specific preventive measures for hip fractures. Although the Japanese Orthopaedic Association guidelines are useful, not all are applicable in patients undergoing hemodialysis. It is important to establish clinical practice guidelines for the management of hip fractures, specifically in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
