[ Summary ] Many factors affect residual renal function in patients receiving dialysis therapy. Massive changes in body fluid during a short-term hemodialysis session may be the most powerful contributor to a decrease in residual renal function. In that sense, the protective effect of peritoneal dialysis has been argued. Kidney ischemia may also be induced by hypotension during a hemodialysis session. Blood pressure control may be the most important factor in maintenance of residual renal function. Appropriate control of anemia, mineral and bone disorders, and inflammation may also be important.
