[ Summary ] Dementia can cause poor glycemic control (hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia), increase functional disability and the incidence of cardiovascular events, as well as worsen life expectancy in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Recently, the number of Japanese patients with DM and dementia undergoing dialysis is increasing annually; therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of dementia is crucial. Early-stage dementia can be diagnosed using screening tests that assess memory impairment and evaluation of instrumental activities of daily living scores, among other such tests. Patients with impaired cognitive functions require the institution of measures including exercise and diet therapy, psychological support, and assistance with social resources (long-term insurance care). Severe hypoglycemia in patients with dementia can lead to a vicious circle. Therefore, prevention of hypoglycemia, establishment of flexible goals to control blood glucose levels, and a simple treatment protocol are important in such patients.
