[ Summary ] Diabetic neuropathy is the most common complication in patients with diabetes and presents various clinical symptoms that deteriorate quality of life (QOL) and prognoses. For the diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy, simplified diagnostic criteria based on symptoms and physical examinations are widely used. In addition, electrophysiological and morphological assessments lead to earlier diagnoses. Primary and secondary prevention of diabetic neuropathy involves maintenance of strict glycemic control for a long period and intervention with an aldose reductase inhibitor. Treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy with pregabalin and duloxetine could improve patient QOL.
