[ Summary ] The prevalence of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is lower than that of hemodialysis (HD) in Japanese patients with diabetes undergoing dialysis. This finding could be attributed to worsened glycemic control secondary to constant glucose exposure or a high incidence of PD-associated peritonitis. Several reports have compared mortality rates between patients with diabetes in whom PD and HD were initiated. However, the results were inconsistent. Patient and technical survival of patients with diabetes undergoing PD are improving secondary to technical advances in the PD dialysates, the PD system/machines, and diabetes medications. Thus, we expect PD to become widely popular among Japanese patients with diabetes.
