[ Summary ] An increasing number of Japanese patients with diabetes require chronic hemodialysis. Glycated hemoglobin values may be underestimated in this patient population owing to unpredictable changes in the survival time of erythrocytes; therefore, measurement of glycated albumin is recommended for the assessment of glycemic control. To date, no optimal targets have been established for glycemic or blood pressure management in these patients secondary to a lack of randomized controlled trials investigating the importance of these 2 factors in this patient population. Additionally, the optimal timing of blood pressure measurements to predict prognosis in diabetic patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis remains unclear.
