[ Summary ] The gold standard of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in children is peritoneal dialysis (PD), although the percentage of younger children undergoing PD is higher. As many as 55 % of patients between 10 and 14 years of age (prepubertal period) choose PD to start RRT with.
Congenital diseases, including the congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), are the major underlying cause of end-stage renal disease, even in prepubertal patients. Having this disease from birth through young childhood may cause school maladaptation and inhibition of independence. It is important for medical caregivers to plan and share a lifetime treatment outline for patients with renal failure and their families as early as possible.
