[ Summary ] Healthcare-associated infection surveillance is the process of collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data pertaining to the status of infection with respect to medical treatment, as well as sharing the results with staff in terms of improving patient care and must be viewed as an active infection control activity. Several medical guidelines and treatment fee systems strongly recommend appropriate implementation of surveillance as an effective infection prevention measure. Performing continuous dialysis-related infection surveillance is important because the infection rate obtained from such surveillance serves as an objective indicator of infection-control activities. This information helps to determine the type of dialysis-related infection occurring at a particular facility, the frequency of occurrence, and the appropriate countermeasures that could be effective in the setting.
