[ Summary ] Recent studies have demonstrated that sarcopenia and frailty are highly prevalent and associated with hospitalization and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Although a dietary protein intake of >1.0 g/kg body weight/day with sufficient energy intake is needed to prevent the onset and progression of sarcopenia and frailty, many PD patients reportedly do not consume the recommended levels of dietary protein and energy. When dietary nutrient intakes are lower than the recommended levels, we should consider incorporating oral enteral feeding including whey protein. In addition, since sedentary lifestyle and metabolic acidosis are related to nutritional status deterioration, it is important that patients maintain physical activity and metabolic acidosis be corrected to prevent sarcopenia and frailty.
