[ Summary ] The International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis guidelines recommend that the rate of PD exit site infections be checked annually. Prophylactic antibiotic administration is recommended, and the exit site should be covered by a film dressing to create a closed environment and affix the catheter. Maintenance of the exit site involves washing the area after a shower, disinfecting the area and applying ointment.
The development of ultra-long and JBS-2 catheters enabled the creation of pre-sternal, upper abdominal, and shoulder blade exit sites in addition to the standard lower abdominal exit site. Catheter damage may occur due to chemicals (such as iodine) and physical actions (rubbing, folding, kinking). Thus, avoiding these actions are important for stable PD catheter use.
