[ Summary ] In cancer care, the medical staff often encounter patients with psychiatric symptoms. The same applies to dialysis patients with cancer. Recent reports indicate that cancer patients without psychiatric disorders are more likely to have cancer-related death when they develop new psychiatric disorders after a cancer diagnosis.
However, accurate assessment is surprisingly difficult. The premise behind support for patients with depression is to correctly assess and confront the psychological symptoms.
In case of suspected psychiatric symptoms, it is important to carefully evaluate physical symptoms and to evaluate them in terms of psychiatric symptoms, as well as socioeconomic, psychological, and spiritual background. Differentiation of delirium, dementia, and depression is a typical example for which the order of assessment is important.
The distinction between delirium and depression, which are common in dialysis patients with cancer, is the essence of psycho-oncology.
