[ Summary ] Radiotherapy is widely used for treatment of many types of cancer. Recently, significant advances have been made in radiotherapy. High-precision photon beam therapy with stereotactic irradiation and intensity-modulated radiotherapy are widely available. Moreover, proton and heavy ion particle beam therapy for certain types of cancer are covered by National Health Insurance in Japan. This progress in radiotherapy makes it possible to offer curative treatment for certain patients who are ineligible for surgery or chemotherapy. On the other hand, palliative radiotherapy to relieve metastatic bone pain is also important. This review discusses the principles and applications of radiotherapy, mainly focusing on external photon beam radiotherapy, which is commonly used and is an important option in cancer patients receiving dialysis.
