[ Summary ] Heart failure is the most common cause of death among dialysis patients in Japan, followed by infection and malignancy, which are increasing in incident dialysis cases, while cerebrovascular disease and acute myocardial infarction are decreasing. In the USA, cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death, with an increasing rate. In Australia and New Zealand, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, but the rate is decreasing. Infection rates have decreased but the rate of withdrawal from dialysis has rapidly increased in these countries since 2000. Psychosocial issues predominate as reasons for withdrawal. Malignant disease is mostly stable in these countries.
